How the aims of the production have been met?
The aim of our project was to create a successful
horror trailer following all the conventions. When it came to characters we
knew which acter would suit a specific character. We used a shehza to play the
teenage girl as the victim, this was a very important role as this characters
pain and agony would emphasize the trailer and create a sense of danger and
show how real the story is. Mishal played the killer as she was tall and seemed
very intimidating which was perfect for this role, as we wanted someone who
could easily over power the innocent girl. For props, we used a plain white
mask for the killer adding suspense. We also used a knife to portray death,
danger, and procession. We also used a school bag to again show that the girl
is a teenager and that the killer just doesn’t leave her alone. The costumes
were chosen helped the audience understand what each character was. The
killer's outfit was all black with a white mask covering the face, this would
bring attention to the mask which. Which will add highlight the main focus
and make the killer seem powerful, frightening and terrorizing. This will also
make the audience wonder who is behind the mask and why, attracting them to
watch the movie. The girl had regular clothing following the stereotypes of
teenagers, so the audience could recognize the character. She wore some shirts
and jeans. The colour of her shirts were dark which was a way she portrayed her
pain as she was haunted, she had no light in her life, hence why she went to
the doctor. The psychiatrist wore a doctor's coat in the trailer. Adding a psychiatrist showed the issue was out of hand that she had to consult a doctor. We all managed to do this over the span of a few
weeks during days off from school, and we found it easier to find an agreeable
time to meet for the shooting as all the actors and filmmakers were from our
group itself. The only filming equipment we used was a camera and tripod. We
filmed the entire trailer with a DSLR camera for sharp shots with great
quality. We filmed from multiple different angles to get the most
effective trailer. We used a low angle shot making the killer look in power and
a high angle shot on the victim, making her look helpless, vulnerable and defenseless.
Because we were creating a horror movie trailer, and most of the scenes were
during nighttime, most of the lighting had to be dark to emphasize on that,
however for the therapist shots we used natural, bright lighting. To edit the
trailer as a whole we used, Final Cut Pro. We used fast transitions between
shots of action and some shots required a black screen to appear in and out of
scenes to make the shot look more fragmented and violent. To transition from scene to scene we used black outs
quite a lot and flickering light, this really emphasized the horror aspect of
the trailer. We added captions in a creepy font, we also didn’t reveal most of
the plot to leave the audience guessing and questioning as to what will happen
next.
How the product applies appropriate codes and
conventions and uses appropriate media language?
Once again we followed the conventions of a horror trailer as
they are recongised by audience and very effective. We used dark lighting and
dark clothing to create darkness. We avoided any short of bright and colourful
areas. Thus had quick shots to add tension and change the atmosphere to a sense
of danger. We used shots that would be used in almost every trailer. However we
didn’t challenge any conventions, as it would be hard and difficult. We used
captions with a mysterious looking font to again add to the horror trailer and
the captions helped the audience follow the story better without reliving the
entire plot.
How the
product represents people, places or events?
We presented the people in the trailer to be very
recognizable as what they’re meant to be. We presented the victim as an average
teenage girl who is weak and afraid. She is a teenager therefore she is already
stressed, as this is a time where usually they already go through different
stages. Adding a killer makes the girls life horrible and extremely stressful. The
victim screams, shouts and cries expressing her pain, suggesting that she is
afraid, confused and doesn’t know how to control her feelings. The physiatrist
is shown as a serious and professional woman. This scenes was filmed in a
compounds clubhouse with an area of sofas. The killer is presented as a demon
with a hidden face who is an unidentified and anonymous. He shows up mainly in
the girls dream then in her thoughts and now he is stuck in her mind. Many of
the shots were filmed at one of a group member’s house, to act as the victim’s
home. We used her lounger but mainly her bedroom where she would have her
nightmares. The nightmares scenes were filmed in an abandoned house; it was
gloomy, dark, quite and vacant. This looked very haunted and scary perfect for
the shots we planned to create.
Where and when the product would be exhibited/distributed?We will distribute the film in cinemas with the
genre of; horror and thriller, we will also have an age ratting 15 plus. We
will add our trailer, teaser and short clips on YouTube and social media in
order to attract audience, as these are the most popular source of media. We
will not be putting our trailer online as it will decrease the amount if our
profit.
What regulations and controls might be applied
to the product and how these have been taken into consideration?
The trailer Incubus will be rated as a 12A as its genre is horror
and might frighten anyone who may be younger as it is about a regular house. We
don’t have any nudity or use of bad language that will affect any child in any
negative way. Though we do have use of blood and other bruises, which might
scare the youngest or more of the sensitive audience, so parents should check
the trailer before the kids should watch the movie.
The strengths and weaknesses of the product in
terms of meeting the needs of its audience?
I think I trailer followed the conventions
of a horror/thriller trailer very well. Especially the shots that are ore towards
the end once the trailer starts getting faster the music works really well with
it, if there were more shots I think we could of added more and done some more
editing but due to lack of time and people in the group being busy that wasn’t possible.
However the trailer looks professional and the captions also work great with
the theme. Even though some shots weren’t clear the trailer still made you
scared and used a good amount of edits.
